"Tall grasses sway in the breeze. A coyote rests beneath a thick layer of underbrush. And in the distance, a red-tailed hawk rides a thermal wave, its sharp eyes watchful for small prey"
Historical Grand Prairie, TX
The earliest settlers were enticed into the "Grand Prairie" area by Republic of Texas land grants. Records established that Micajah and Elizabeth Goodman took advantage of the offerings and arrived about 1846. Unfortunately, she passed away later that year and was buried in Watson Cemetery near modern-day Interstate 30 and State Highway 360.
About the same time, David Jordan and his sons arrived from Tennessee. They settled just south of the Trinity River near present-day MacArthur Boulevard and Northeast 31st Street.
In 1859, brothers Marion and James Loyd from Dallas moved south in search of more room to graze cattle and horses, settling on Walnut Creek, now known as Lake Joe Pool.
In 1861, Alexander MacRae Dechman was living in Birdville, later renamed Haltom City, with his family. He found that he could trade his wagon and oxen for land in Dallas County. Dechman bought 239.5 acres in what is now downtown Grand Prairie.
On January 2, 1863, Dechman filed title on his prairie land, establishing what would become Grand Prairie.
He eventually abandoned the idea of living on the land and instead granted right-of-way through the property to the railroad. Since the postal system sought to establish a post office in that community, the name Deckman was initially established. It differed from Dechman's spelling as the postal service couldn't read the handwritten notation. This became a reason for confusion, so the official name was reestablished as Grand Prairie. The servicing railroad company also pressed for this change.
In 1909, Grand Prairie was finally incorporated. Business enterprises were growing quickly. The town boasted a cotton gin, dry goods, grocery stores, hotels, a lumber yard, a carrier maker, and a drug store.
- In 1918, Grand Prairie installed its first water system.
- In 1923, Grand Prairie completed a project that placed mercury vapor lights on ornamental poles along its Main Street. It was now the second town in the US that boasted the use of this type of lighting.
Over the years, Grand Prairie was the scene of many modern industrial businesses.
- Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control
- Poly-America, Inc.
- Bell Helicopter-Textron
- Vought Aircraft Industries
- Republic National Distribution
All have a presence in Grand Prairie. The long journey that began with the Goodman, Jordan, and Loyd families, expanded and stage set by A. MacRae Dechman grew to an incorporated city of 197,500 living on 81 square miles of land and water in 2020.
